Jean jedoch hat ein Ziel, er will den letzten Wunsch der an TBC verschiedenen Fantine erfüllen und ihre Tochter Cosette aus den Klauen der gierigen Thénardiers befreien und ihr eine behütetes Aufwachsen ermöglichen.2001 nahmen sich Sebastian Baczkiewicz (bekannt für seine Pilgrim Fantasy Hörspielserie) und Lin Coghlan, zwei bekannte Hörspieleautoren der BBC diesen klassischen Stoff vor und setzten ihn in ein fast sechsstündiges Hörspiel (5 h, 50 min) mit Sally Evans und Jeremy Mortimer als Regisseure um. Für BBC Hörspielefans, allesamt sehr bekannte Namen. Die Geschichte wurde dabei auf die reine Erzählung reduziert, alle Exkurse Hugos sind weggefallen. Jean Valjeans Geschichte wird komplett erzählt, Fantines beginnt erst mit der Übergabe von Cosette an die Thernadiers und wird insgesamt deutlich gerafft. Wie bei allen neueren klassischen Adaptionen der BBC, wurde sehr vorsichtig gekürzt, überall ein wenig, so dass die Geschichte fast komplett erhalten bleibt. Dennoch sind natürlich einige Figuren fast komplett eliminiert worden, wie M. Mabeuf, der zwar vorkommt, aber nur in seinen Begegnungen mit Marius und Gavroche, nicht jedoch auf der Barrikade. Die Geschichte von Gavroches kleinen Brüder ist ebenfalls weggefallen und Hugos berühmtes Vorwort, das Orson Welles in seinem Hörspiel 1937 ganz besonders betonte. Combeferre ist eine Mischung aus Courfeyrac, Joly, Prouvaire, und Bossuet. Madame Thénardier schlägt Fantine vor Cosette, dazulassen, weil sie sonst keinen Job bekommt und auch einige Szenen im Kloster werden hinzuerfunden. Insgesamt alles aber in akzeptablem Maß und sehr nahe am Original.
